F.A.Q – (NLP) Neuro Linguistic Programming
Neuro Linguistic Programming started as an approach to change the management created by John Grinder and Richard Bandler in the 1970s. The approach draws from the theory that our "programming" - the behaviours and patterns we learn through experience, are interrelated to our neurological process and language. NLP approaches psychotherapy, communication and personal development by these connections. Further, the interrelations between the three can be discovered and manipulated to "model" the skills of achievers and exceptional people, so that other individuals can also acquire them.
NLP originated out of a separate research being conducted at the University of California. The study was about the different techniques used by psychotherapists, that helped in producing favourable results. The study helped researchers in developing a new methodology called NLP.
Researchers expanded on the topic of the initial research, "modelling and studying three people (Virginia Satir, Milton Erickson and Fritz Peris) who had successfully overcome major problems. The approaches and patterns used by the three individuals, as well as the characteristic traits developed by them were carefully studied and the NLP methodology was developed.
NLP trainings and sessions have gained popularity over the years but not without receiving their fair share of controversies and scepticism. For example, in the early 80s and 90s, the approach was extensively misused by sales-personnel. Though the practice is discontinued now and certified therapists as well as coaching centres have adopted NLP, many people continue to be doubtful of the approach.
The truth is that while NLP is not a means of manipulation, it is also not governed by any specific body in SA. There is therefore, not even a single NLP coaching institute in SA that can claim it is legitimate or real.
A good idea is to engage in NLP trainings and sessions with reputed Life Coaching institutions. Institutes in SA typically provide the NLP Practitioners and NLP Master Practitioner's courses. Both the courses are more or less a version of the same NLP International Standard. We at Let's-Live Coaching, believe that NLP is a great skill to possess.
